Reduce Your EGTs and Improve Your Towing: The Stainless Diesel 60/60 "Tow Boss" Upgrade

by Cecilia Herrell 26 Jun 2026

IIf you own a 2013–2018 Dodge Ram with the 6.7L Cummins, you’re likely familiar with the love hate relationship of the factory VGT (which stands for Variable Geometry Turbo, if you didn't already know). While the stock turbo provides a great low end response and an integrated exhaust brake, it is notorious for sticking vanes, soot buildup, and high Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGTs) when pulling a heavy load. We all know those EGTs are important to keep an eye on. If you arent monitoring your EGTs you absolutely should be.

Enter the Stainless Diesel 60/60 "Tow Boss" 5-Blade Mafia Turbo. This drop-in upgrade is designed specifically for the truck owner who wants more reliability and cooler EGTs without sacrificing the daily drivability that makes a Cummins legendary.

What Makes it Different?

The heart of this turbo is Stainless Diesel’s signature 5-Blade Mafia™ compressor wheel. Most factory or aftermarket wheels use 6, 7, or even 11 blades. By moving to a 5-blade configuration, the turbo can move a larger amount of air with much less effort, leading to a distinct, aggressive whistle and, more importantly, quicker spooling!

Key Specifications:

  • Compressor Wheel: 60mm 5-Blade Billet Mafia™ wheel.

  • Turbine Wheel: 60mm 10-blade high-flow turbine.

  • Power Rating: Supports up to 600+ HP (with supporting fuel mods).

  • Fitment: 100% direct drop-in for 2013–2018 Ram 2500/3500 and Cab & Chassis models.

Why Upgrade to the 60/60?

1. Lower EGTs for Safer Towing

The biggest enemy of a 6.7L Cummins under load is heat. The "Tow Boss" is engineered to flow more air than the stock unit, which effectively "washes" the heat out of the cylinders. This means you can maintain higher speeds on steep grades without constantly watching your pyrometer.

2. Sleeper Performance

Because it uses the factory style housing, this turbo looks stock to the untrained eye. It’s a perfect choice for "Work Stock" pulling classes or for owners who want a high-performance rig that doesn't scream modified every time the hood is popped.

No Actuator? No Problem.

The specific model (without the VGT actuator) is a cost effective option for owners whose factory electronic actuator is still in good working condition. Since the actuator is often a high failure item, many people choose to move their existing one over or upgrade to a heavy duty aftermarket actuator separately.

Note: If your current turbo has a "U010C" code or the exhaust brake has stopped working, you may want to purchase the version that includes  the VGT actuator.

The Verdict: Is it Worth It?

If you use your truck as a tool, whether hauling a horse trailer, a camper, or a flatbed, the Stainless Diesel 60/60 Tow Boss is one of the most practical upgrades you can make. It addresses the reliability flaws of the OEM unit while providing a noticeable bump in mid range power and a significant drop in operating temperatures.
